An interview with Amy

This is Rebecca, a college student who helped us here at Bloomin Yarns during her recent holiday break. One of Rebecca's jobs was to interview our staff and write a blog post on each person. Check back over the next few weeks for more of her interviews and enjoy getting to know all the lovely girls who work here! Thanks, Rebecca! It was great having you!

Two women and their husbands walk into Bloomin Yarns on a Saturday afternoon. While the women gravitate toward yarns that catch their eye, the men gaze absentmindedly around the store, obviously out of place. One of the staff members offers them apple cider, and before they know it, the three are engaged in an enthusiastic sports discussion. The men are pleasantly surprised with this woman who can knit a hat and talk college football simultaneously. Meet Amy, a freelance sports writer who spends Thursdays and Saturdays working at Bloomin Yarns. “I believe that everyone needs a hobby- everyone needs something that is away from their profession.” She says that she does not remember learning to knit- she was so young at the time- but says that she probably learned from her mother. Like many, Amy went in and out of phases of knitting before becoming committed to it. When she was working in the athletic department at UCLA in the early 2000s, she was doing a lot of quilting, but she picked up knitting again because it is more portable. When she moved back to Pennsylvania, she connected with knitters, and says that they were her first friends after coming back. She then began working with Bloomin’ Yarns in 2008. She enjoys working here because “Michelle does a fantastic job of making people feel comfortable in her shop, and there is a good range of yarns. As a staff we all compliment each other well, since everyone has a different area of expertise. We all like each other too!” Amy’s areas of expertise include socks and sweater knitting. Oh, and knowing how to keep the men occupied while their wives go wild over yarn.

Below are photos and information about our Winter 2012 Knit-A-Longs that begin now.

Prizes!

For this set of KALs we are going to have prizes, lots of prizes (we're still amassing the collection but promise they'll be great)! For that reason, we must have some ground rules:

1. This series of Knit-A-Longs begin immediately.
2. Projects must be completed by Saturday, April 7th, our Fifth Anniversary, in order to be qualify for a prize. Winners will be drawn that day.
3. You must use yarn purchased at Bloomin Yarns.
4. We'll draw one winning name for each separate project.

3. Iced is available free at Knitty.com. Judy made hers with Berroco Peruvia Quick a perfect substitute for the yarn called for in this pattern.

4. Cowl-Neck Cape - Knit Simple Magazine, Holiday 2011. Cathy made her Cowl-Neck Cape with Berroco's Blackstone Tweed. This pattern calls for a worsted wt. yarn. We have tons of options should you want to make this project!

5. Caramel - a free pattern available here. I first saw one of our customers, Marilyn, wearing this sweater before Christmas. (I wish I'd taken her picture!) She had made it with Madelinetosh Sock in pink and orange. It was stunning and I've been dreaming of it ever since!! The great thing about this sweater is that the gauge is 22 stitches/4 inches. You can use a DK wt. yarn, or lighter - as long as you can get gauge!!
I'm making mine with Madelinetosh Pashmina (sport wt.) in subtle stripes of Winter Wheat and Olivia.

Janice has been considering using three colors in different sized stripes. So creative! She's been swatching away!

6. Honey's Shawl - a single pattern available at Bloomin Yarns. This shawl is pure fun! Great for a beginner. You'll learn increases and how to knit stripes, then at the end knit a mohair ruffle. The color options are endless!

An interview with Janice

Janice began working at Bloomin Yarns to have a job close to her home in Bethel Park, but also- more exactly- to work in a place where she could stay close to her love of knitting. She has now been here for four years. “Michelle and all of the girls, of course, make it a special warm place, as well as all of the beautiful yarns.” Some of her favorite yarn brands include The Fibre Company, Madeline Tosh, and Rowan. She prefers knitting DK and worsted weight yarn, and she especially likes natural fibers. When asked if she has a favorite project or pattern, she replied, “I’m liking cables right now. I mostly knit sweaters, some accessories… My first sweater was white, very eighties, off the shoulder, you know (laughs).” That first sweater was completed with the help of her grandmother, who also knitted and crocheted. Janice learned to knit from a class at a local yarn shop in Iowa, circa 1987. Since then, she has continued to explore knitting as well as other areas of fiber arts. She has been spinning for 8 years, commenting that “the hard part is finding time to do it, but it’s relaxing and I do enjoy it.” She also does needle and wet felting, and as of late, has been obsessed with acorns. One of her felting projects includes a series of wet felted acorn bodies attached to tops that she collected from nature. Janice’s creativity and easygoing personality make her easy to talk to when knitters have questions about anything from pattern to color choice. As she described her co-workers, Janice, too, makes Bloomin Yarns a warm and special place.

Knit Swirl Update:

More and more "Swirls" continue to arrive at Bloomin Yarns! Colleen knit her "Silhouette in the Sun" with Berroco Peruvia. It's stunning!

Cathy's "Sheer Beauty", knit with String Theory Merino dk and Kidsilk Haze, is a perfect fit.

And so is Sara's version of "Sheer Beauty" knit in the same combination of yarns as Cathy's.

Sara completed her Swirl in time to wear it to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival in October. She was stopped multiple times by curious knitters wondering what pattern she was wearing. Where have they all been??? Knit, Swirl! is HOT in McMurray, PA!

New in October and November!

More of the yarns and items we carefully selected at TNNA in June have continued to arrive over the past month.....

One of our most anticipated yarns is from Swans Island Yarns. Swans Island originally started out making hand woven and dyed blankets in Maine. A few years ago they began producing beautiful yarns. All the yarns are spun in a certified organic mill and dyed in a 1790's farmhouse on the coast of Maine using only 100% natural dyes. Read more about their story here.

We received several timeless patterns designed by Michele Orne, with several more on their way: a classic baby blanket, two cardigans and a cowl.

It's a special day when a box from Art Yarns arrives! This one is loaded with sparkles and beads!

These beauties are Madtosh Merino Light, a fingering wt. yarn that's perfect for shawls or perhaps one of the pretty cardigans from Hannah Fettig/Knitbot. How about Wispy, Featherweight or Breezy??

And, for any project when you just need something special and yummy, try Madtosh Pashmina (merino, silk and cashmere). It's perfect for Goodale, the pretty Wildflower Cardigan from Coastal Knits or a simple cowl to caress your neck.

Knit Swirl Update

Dianne is our first customer to complete her Swirl sweater! She made her Sheer Beauty with String Theory Merino dk and Rowan Kidsilk Haze. Doesn't it look great? Dianne's holding her sweater closed with an adorable "Twig" Shawl pin from Jul.

Janet was next to complete her Swirl called Forest Fiesta made with Noro Silk Garden Lite.

This is such a fun time of year!

All the goodies that we've carefully ordered are arriving.....something almost every day. Which means we ae busy adding items to inventory, tagging, rearranging and the hardest part of all....making space on the shelves and in our storage room! We've recently moved a lot of yarns to our sale section to help with that.

One of the companys we're most excited to have ordered from is Fleece Artist and it's sister company Handmaiden. Pewter Shawl Pins and buttons by Perl Grey should arrive this week as well as the pattern for Hazel.

Handmaiden was the first company to introduce the very popular (over 5000 projects on Ravelry) Sea Silk, a blend of silk and Seacell, a fiber made from seaweed. The beautiful Sea Silk cries out to be knit into something lacy.

My Crashing Waves Shawl that I knit with String Theory's Caper Sock Yarn will feel so great wrapped around my neck when colder days arrive. That little bit of cashmere makes such a difference!

And on really cold days I'll be wearing this cabled cowl, called Magnolia Cowl (a Kelbourne Woolens pattern available at BY). I knit mine in The Fibre Company's Terra. Have I told you lately how much I love Terra? I do, I do.....it's my favorite yarn ever:)

I had a chance to travel to Maine in May to attend my son's college graduation. Always on the lookout for yarny goodness, I found String Theory a hand-dying duo in Blue Hill, Maine I was doubly thrilled to discover they were willing to supply Bloomin Yarns with some of thier gorgeous yarns! I brought home Merino dk and Caper sock.

If you haven't had a chance to see them, you'd better hurry! They won't be around for long!

Kathy made this sweet baby set with Zara, a soft merino wool that's machine washable.

Here's Dianne wearing her Brigid Jacket she made with Terra from the Fibre Co. The pattern for Brigid is in the book Vintage Modern Knits.

Dianne also made this incredibly soft shawl with the Fibre Company's Road to China Light. The pattern, Margarethe, is also in the book Vintage Modern Knits.

Dianne also took the Roositud Beret class with Courtney and Kate from the Fibre Co. back in March. Here's her cute beret!

Janice recently completed this colorful Gedifra Jacket. She learned a new technique called Hairpin Lace Crochet for this project which was made with Gedifra Fiorista Fino. She was even stopped by the Stitch Diva, herself, for a photo at TNNA earlier this month! Stitch Diva has great tutorials if you'd like to learn Hairpin Lace Crochet.

Amy made this cute bunny, a pattern in Itty Bitty Toys, for her niece for Easter.

Valerie whipped up this stunning shawl with Tilli Tomas Pure and Simple. The pattern, called Damask, is available for purchase at Ravelry.com.

Noro Taiyo is becoming one of our favorite year-round yarns. The combination of cotton, silk and a tiny bit of wool make it cuddly soft even for those who don't like the feel of wool! These are the six newest colorways:

Judy made this pretty wrap, the Sugar Maple Shawl, with Cascade 128 Superwash.

Eve made this adorable little coat for her granddaughter with Classic Elite's Wool Bamboo.

The color black is so hard to photograph and this hat, knit by Jan, is black not grey. Jan used a hat pattern from Shibui Knits.

Sara knit her Caireen, a lovely cabled wrap, with Cascade 220.

Naomi brought in her nearly completed blanket called Big Fat Fern. Naomi is using Classic Elite's Sprout.

Ruth recently got back into knitting and is doing a great job! Here she is modeling a pretty scarf knit in Noro Iro.

Kathy made this cardigan with Berroco's Borealis. Instead of sewing in a zipper, Kathy chose to use a classy Shawl Pin by Annie Adams for her closure.

Vintage Modern Knits Event

What a great time we had hosting Kate Gagnon Osborn and Courtney Kelley who own Kelbourne Woolens, distributors of The Fibre Company yarns. They are also the designers of all the beautiful garments and accessories in the new book Vintage Modern Knits! These girls are smart and innovative but have work hard to keep alive vintage techniques as you will quickly see in Vintage Modern Knits.

We hope you give one (or two!) of their designs a try!

Courtney and Kate arrived on Saturday afternoon, March 5 and after arranging and displaying ALL their trunk show items, got right down to business teaching the Roositud Inlay technique to a great group of eager knitters!

Later that evening we enjoyed some wine and goodies while Kate and Courtney signed books...

Sara was knitting away.......

Courtney worked on a "secret" project while discussing yarny issues with Janice and Kate, who is keeping warm with her luscious Margarethe shawl wrapped around her neck.

Sassfras is one of my favorites. It's actually a square that's folded into a triangle in this photo.

Mountain Ash is another beauty. It feels so amazing on!

Linden is a cute, small shawl that would look great with a Spring or Summer outfit.

I couldn't resist the soft squshy cables of the Magnolia Cowl. Had to start one for myself!

Balsalm is a generous sized scarf in a simple lace pattern.

Tupelo would be a great beginner project.

This is one of those times of the year when our friendly UPS gal makes deliveries to Bloomin Yarns way more often than normal and the boxes she brings are bigger too! We're not complaining because it means that Spring really is right around the corner, just as PA's notorius Groundhog has predicted. If you're still not convinced and the cloudy skies have you feeling down, stop by for a dose of color and inspiration!

Rowan's new yarn, Savannah, is a soft and intersting blend of cotton and silk. It's a worsted wt. yarn which equals quick knit!

Cel brough her gorgeous Fan Shawl to shawl to show us. She used one of our kits we have made up with Crystal Palace Yarns' Mini Mochi.

Judy made this set with Sheep Shop Yarns Sheep 2. Love that color! The cowl is Wonky - a free pattern from Knitty.com and.....the mitts....sorry, I'm not sure!

Cindy made this adorable felted sheep, snowmen and to-be-felted penquin with Marie Mayhew patterns. Really, really fun and cute!

Sara made "Honeysuckle", a design by Sarah Hatton in only 4 weeks! She used Rowan Kidsilk Haze. When that girl sets her mind to something....watch out!

Ellen's baby blanket, made with Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, is just lovely. Light and soft. Just what a baby needs!

Here's Stevie modeling her beautiful Tea Leaves Cardigan. I'm going to be honest and tell you that Stevie ran out of yarn on this project but came in and found the perfect tweed to coordinate with it. She knit the bands, then crocheted an edging around the entire sweater. It really makes this sweater extra special!

Peggy took Amy's "Baby Bobbi Bear" class recently and produced this totally adorable little blue bear. She even outfitted him with his very own sweater and scarf!

Debi knit these soft and and squishy mittens with The Fibre Company's Terra.

We're so excited that Courtney Kelley and Kate Gagnon Osborn, owners of Kelbourne Woolens (The Fibre Company Yarns), are coming to Bloomin Yarns on Saturday and Sunday, March 5th and 6th!
The books are available now at Bloomin Yarns!

I made a Yvette so you can check it out ahead of time!

Finished project #1:

I have to start off by announcing to all of you who have been following the progress of Valerie's grandchild "Blueberry". Blueberry (he was the size of a blueberry when his mom and dad found out he was on the way) is officially a BOY! He was born on February 1st and is anxiously awaiting a real name! Grandma Valerie is quite excited to go to England to meet him!

And now for our finished knitting projects:

Brenna is 13 years old and is an awesome knitter! She's modeling a gorgeous Fair Isle tam, a Ysolda sweater, Turkish bed socks and a lovely cowl she made with Madtosh dk. She even has most of her projects posted on Ravelry. I'm just so sad she lives in Minnesota. Wish you lived here, Brenna!

Susan made this lovely Block of the Month afghan with Rowan Alpaca Cotton.

This is my "old" friend Chris. He came in wanting yarn for his mom, Dottie, to make him a Norwegian Hat. He selected all the colors himself......

And a few days later, Dottie sent me this picture. Can you tell they're an artistic family?

Wow! I have a ton of great projects to show you!

First up is Bonnie modeling a darling sweater from this year's Berroco Blackstone Tweed booklet. It uses both Blackstone Tweed Worsted and Chunky. Love the ruffle details on the front......

Have you seen the Lizzard Ridge afghan from Knitty.com? This is the first one I've ever seen in person. I'm so glad Chris brought it to show us! Aren't the colors of Noro Kureyon just amazing?

David did a great job with this sweater he made with Ultra Alpaca, even sewing in a zipper!

Most of you have heard me talk about what a speedy knitter Valerie is. I finally got a picture of her in action! She's working on a shop model in a new yarn, Rizos, which creates ruffles when knitted. It's a quick, fun knit! One ball makes a scarf. Valerie's also wearing a gorgeous sweater she recently completed in Debbie Bliss Prima using an Ella Rae pattern.

And here's the completed scarf!

This is Lisa and her cute children. Lisa is wearing her Tea Leaves cardigan knit in Cascade 220!

Jane and her daughter Kim both took our recent Star Crossed Beret class. Jane is shown here wearing the hat Kim made. Looks great!

Nonpareil Knit-A-Long and New Arrivals

Knit-A-Long News:

How are you all doing with your KAL sweaters? Our Super Speedy Knitter Extrodinaire, aka Valerie, has completed her Nonpareil. Don't dispair! You all have seen her knit, right? She's incredible. Doesn't she look fabulous? Sandy is also finished - just needs to sew on buttons then we'll get her picture. I'm getting close.

It seems that most of us are using much less yarn that the pattern called for. I'll probably complete mine with 10 balls rather than 13! Please feel free to return any unused yarn from this project.

Almost forgot to show you two new colors of Noro Kochoran, a heavy worsted wt. yarn.

We have been lucky to have some wonderful friends who are willing to knit samples for us to display in the store. This is Cinder, a luscious, reversible cabled scarf designed by Jared Flood and knit in Ariosa a beautiful blend of merino wool and cashmere.

Valour is a vest originally knit in Rowan Colourscape Chunky. We love this design so much that we made it again in Rowan's new yarn Renew. It's a flattering style on all body types!

This "Sumptious Shrug", knit with Imperial Stock Ranch's Pencil Roving, would be great to toss on if you work in a too-cold office or to wear over your coat on a cold and blustery day! The patterns are sold out for the moment but more will be on their way soon.

This is an adorable one skein project from Blue Sky Alpacas.

Knit in Brushed Suri, it's perfect for those who love the look of mohair but can't tolerate the fiber. Brushed Suri is all about soft!

Here's a cute hat knit with one strand each of Shibui's latest sock yarn Stacatto and Silk Cloud. The pattern called "Emily" can be found in Shibui's Luxury book.

Laurel made this adorable fair isle hat for her equally adorable little boy. The pattern, Norwegian Star Earflap Hat, is a free Ravelry download.

She also made her little Mr. Adorable this super cool Tractor Sweater!

Candy made this cute Ragman sweater for a special little boy.

Ann's been so busy! This cardigan is made with Berroco's Origami.

She's made the following three sweaters for some lucky young ladies. Ann achieved a unique and very cool effect by combining various sock yarns with Berroco's Vintage.

This is Caitlyn's second Frukttradgard (yes, that's really the name! The pattern is available at Bloomin Yarns), a cute hat she knit with one skein of The Fibre Company's Road to China Light.

Susan is modeling her summery scarf she made with Ellyn Cooper's Cyclone. The pattern is one that is available free with yarn purchase. But hurry, there's not much Cylone left!

This post is just full of "adorable". Katie did a great job on this little-boy hat and sweater featuring a bunny and cabbage that were added wtih duplicate stitch. Great buttons!

Vivian recently shared several finished projects with us. The first is the Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf, a Churchmouse Classic pattern.

Here's a closeup of the linen stitch pattern. Vivian used three different colorways of Claudia Hand Painted Sock yarn. Love it!

This little cardi was made with Geidfra Fiorista Fino using a Jo Sharp pattern. Vivian added the lace pattern to the bottom portion of the body.

Gift kniting is in full swing! Vivian checked this one off her list. Made for a friend, this Ruffled and Ruched Scarf is a quick and special knit.

Dara made this sweet little bolero for her little girl. Little girl #2 is anxiously awaiting her coordinating version!
